Saransk

You may not have heard of Saransk, but that doesn’t mean you should dismiss it.  Once a fortress, it developed into a town, receiving that status in 1780.  Populated by Cossacks, it evolved from a military town into a centre for crafts and trade.  These days, it’s the setting for numerous museums, churches, theatres, monuments and other places of tourist interest.
