Kazan

Over two million tourists visited Kazan last year. This historic city lies at the confluence of the Rivers Volga and Kazanka and is host to the UNESCO-listed Kazan Kremlin, featuring the Qol-Sarif mosque inside the citadel. Branded the “Third Capital” of Russia, it’s been host to a number of important sporting events, including the 2013 Summer Universiade, the 2014 World Fencing Championships and the 2015 World Aquatic Championships. 
 
Kazan was founded in the 13th century by the Mongols and was the seat of the Tatar Empire.  Afterwards, it became the capital of the Khanate of Kazan and was then conquered by Ivan the Terrible. This chequered history has resulted in a unique blend of Russian and Tatar cultures making it a fascinating place to visit. Read more about Kazan.
