Rostov-on-Don
The largest city in southern Russia and the gateway to the Caucasus, Rostov-on-Don sits on the Don River, a prime location for defence and trade. Its historic centre is rich in architecture and monuments, with Bolshaya Sadovaya Street one of the main focal points for visitors in this respect.
Some of its attractions are a little more unusual, notably the Rostov Academic Drama Theatre which takes the form of a tractor. Other sights worth building into an itinerary are Rostov Zoo, founded 90 years ago and the 160 hectare botanical gardens. The riverfront is particularly attractive in summer and sandy beaches and numerous cafes draw locals and visitors alike.
