Dear Traveller,
What about enjoying real winter in Russia?
The temperatures here in the UK are on the slide, leaves are on the turn and the shops are unveiling this year’s Christmas decorations. Whether we like it or not, the end of autumn is fast approaching and if you’re anything like us, our thoughts have turned to winter holidays.
If you’re contemplating something a little different to your usual ski trip this year, then why not consider one of our special winter holidays? Russia is arguably at its seasonal best when covered with a liberal dump of snow, and no region does this winter wonderland better than in the far north. Kizhi Island in the heart of Karelia is one of Russia’s UNESCO World Heritage sites. This fascinating open air museum contains an eclectic collection of authentic wooden structures, some of which are centuries old. Everything from churches to agricultural buildings is represented here, transported from across the region to their final resting place. You’ll be able to explore the Church of the Resurrection of Lazarus, the oldest surviving wooden church in the country, and marvel at the Church of the Transfiguration of our Saviour, constructed almost entirely without the use of nails. They just don’t make places like this anymore!
Better still, though the island is open year round, in winter Lake Onega, in which it sits, freezes over, so visitors have the adventure of a thrilling snowmobile ride in order to reach it. We operate several group tours which feature Kizhi Island and a popular option is to combine it with a stay in elegant St Petersburg, Russia’s Venice of the North. With myriad museums and palaces to explore, this is truly one of the world’s great cities and one that should be on everyone’s bucket list.
For outdoor adventurers, we also offer a fabulous dog sledding and ice fishing trip. On the shores of Lake Onega, Europe’s second largest lake, you’ll be given a practical class about how to mush before taking to the ice to try dog sledding for yourself. Once you’ve got the hang of it, there are beautiful pine forest trails to investigate. Just as much fun is a visit to the dogs’ farm where you’ll have the opportunity to meet them and see how they’re looked after. Taking advantage of the frozen lake, you’ll also have the chance to try ice-fishing, a popular pastime in Russia. And if you get lucky and catch something, our hosts will prepare it for supper.
If you haven’t explored this region before, then we definitely recommend you expand your travel education and see for yourself what beautiful Karelia has to offer. Feel free to give us a call to find out more.
