Dear Traveller,
Are you ready for a Russian winter?
Winter envelopes Russia in haste. Autumn scurries in and out as if trapped in a revolving door, leaving a chill in the air. But don’t write off a trip as the mercury plummets – embrace the cold and experience a full-on Russian winter. Here’s how.
Enjoy the romance of elegant St Petersburg
Northerly St Petersburg looks breathtaking under a covering of snow. Wrap up and take a leisurely stroll canalside, dipping into its many museums and historic buildings when you need to warm up. If you’re planning to visit with a special someone, why not snuggle up under a blanket as you take a ride in a traditional troika through one of the city’s parks?
Book your tickets for a capital performance
Everyone needs to come in from the cold at some point, so why not make it to see a performance at one of Moscow’s world-class theatres. The Bolshoi is staging Rimsky- Korsakov’s The Snow Maiden in mid-December and it’s not too late to get your tickets. If you prefer ballet to opera, they’re following it up later in the month with a production of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker. Whichever you choose, it’s sure to be a memorable experience.
Take to the ice under the Aurora Borealis
If your sights are set on exploring the Russian countryside, few activities can be more fun in winter than crossing frozen lakes on the back of a dog sled. Karelia’s beautiful Lake Onego is the perfect setting if you’re hoping to distinguish your mush from your hush. If you’re more of a speed freak, you will love a snowmobile ride. As daylight slips away, you might catch a glimpse of the dazzling Northern Lights.
Set off across Siberia on a train ride to remember
You might think we’ve lost our minds for a minute, but remember the trains that traverse the famous Trans-Siberian route are all well heated, so winter’s an excellent time to enjoy a Russian rail adventure. Look out on the snow from the comfort of your toasty compartment and learn a little about how the locals cope with one of the harshest environments on earth from your fellow travelling companions.
Ditch the Alps this year
Sochi earnt its place on the ski map after successfully hosting the Winter Olympics in 2014. Putin himself skies here in the nearby Krasnaya Polyana resorts and what’s good enough for the Russian president is good enough for us! With long runs easily reached by gleaming gondolas and speedy chair lifts as well as some excellent off-piste skiing, there’s plenty of choice whatever your ability.
Whatever your plans this winter, there’s a Russian holiday that will fit the bill. Why not give us a call and let us help you plan the winter trip of a lifetime?
