Dear Traveller,
The borders are open now. Are you ready to go to Russia?
For many of us, 2020 has been the summer of the staycation, but it’s now time to think about broadening our horizons. We’re delighted to report that from the end of July, the Russian authorities started to lift restrictions on international flights and on 01 August, Britain was one of the first countries to be welcomed back, along with Turkey and Tanzania. From mid-August Switzerland is also on the Russian green list. So, there is no reason to wait now.
Book your 2020 tour to Russia now and get 20% off! Offer expires on 15 September 2020. Just enter the code RUSSIAISOPEN in the booking form or see more details below.
What does that mean in practice?
Firstly, the new regulations apply to arrivals by air, rather than by sea or overland. Certain regularly scheduled flights are now permitted to land. Secondly, requirements vary between airlines, but broadly speaking, it means that so long as you can prove you don’t have COVID-19, you won’t need to quarantine for two weeks once you reach Russia. Thirdly, we have to remind you that the borders between Russia and Mongolia or China remain closed. That Trans-Mongolian rail trip you were hoping to do will have to be put on the backburner for a little while longer. Don’t worry, you can still ride the classic Trans-Siberian all the way to Vladivostok if you need a train fix.
Testing, testing
As per the rules of the Russian authorities, all travellers departing from the UK are required to have a negative COVID-19 test taken not earlier than three days before arrival in Russia. They must present the printout of the test certificate issued from the accredited test centre before boarding the plane.
The COVID-19 testing must be done through the Embassy of Russian Federation in the UK accredited COVID – 19 labs / centres. The good thing is that while applying for a visa you can book a test at the same time. There is a cost to pay for a test, however with our special offer (20% off the tour price, see below for more details) you will easily cover that.
What happens when you arrive?
Once you disembark the plane, you’ll need to consent to a simple temperature check. If your temperature is normal and your COVID-19 test paperwork and visa are in order, then you’re good to go. If you stay healthy, that’s about it.
However, if you develop any symptoms of COVID-19 while in Russia and/or if you test positive for COVID-19 then you will be required to self-isolate until you have recovered and tested negative for COVID-19 on a PCR test. You should comply with any additional screening measures put in place by the authorities. Of course, that’s not unique to Russia. It’s what you’ll find happening in other countries as governments seek to contain and eliminate the virus.
What about my visa?
Visa processing centres are now back in action, so if this is a brand new trip, then the procedures are much the same as before. If you were due to travel to Russia earlier this summer and already had a visa issued for travel commencing after 15th March, then although you will need to reapply, most of the charges involved will be waived. We’ll be happy to fill you in on the small print.
The Foreign & Commonwealth Office haven’t yet altered the advice for travel to Russia, but with numbers of active cases steadily in decline since mid-May, it’s only a matter of time before that changes. Until then, there’s technically nothing to stop you visiting the country, but be aware that most standard insurance policies won’t provide cover if you do.
So what can you expect when you get there?
One of the biggest benefits to being among the first tourists to Russia post-lockdown is that visitor numbers are still low. Picking up last-minute tickets to world-class museums is going to be relatively easy, and what a great experience it will be to see those places without others milling around. So why not take advantage of the lull in tourism and enjoy Russia without the crowds? If you travel with us, you can be sure our tours are limited to small groups – that’s just how we like it.
Like many other countries across Europe, the wearing of face masks is now a common sight in Russia. Face masks are now mandatory inside most Russian museums, on public transport and in shops, for instance. Social distancing, too, is the norm now. But don’t forget, that’s what we are now used to here in the UK, so if you’re going to need to wear a mask, you may as well make it somewhere exciting.
The long wait is over
Russia’s ready for you – and as soon as you’re ready for Russia we’re here to help you see this extraordinary country for yourself.
