Dear Traveller, |
It's winter in Russia! |
A month into 2016 already and winter is in full swing.
January has been a month of festivities. Russia has seen in both the New Year and the Old New Year. If something is worth celebrating, we say it's worth celebrating twice!
The 25th of January was Tatiana's Day. Name days are an important event in Russia; locals celebrate not only the day they were born but also that of the saint they were named after. But Tatiana's Day is especially important as she is the patron saint of students and the holiday marks the end of the student exams and the start of the holidays. If you've missed it, don't worry, there are plenty more name days to come throughout the coming months.

Taking a winter break in Russia is as much about experiencing the weather as it is the myriad sightseeing opportunities. Temperatures plummet well below zero and snow lies thick on the ground, but with the right clothes for outdoors and the heating turned up inside, there's no reason to be put off by the cold. Pack a pair of snow boots and a warm coat and you're good to go. After all, who doesn't want the excuse of buying a furry hat with ear flaps as a souvenir?
Russia's famous landmarks look all the more photogenic in their wintry setting and of course, you'll benefit from shorter queues than if you visited in the height of summer. It's also the perfect time, of course, to try out the wide range of winter activities on offer. You can try everything from snowmobiling to dog sledding, ice fishing to stargazing. Who knows, you might even catch a glimpse of the magical Northern Lights.
Or perhaps you're game enough to experience a banya? These Russian saunas can be used year round, but at this time of the year out in the countryside, many patrons choose to swap their dip in the cold water pool for a roll in the snow outside. Having sweated it out in the steam room, it's quite a shock to the system, but wonderfully invigorating and good for your health. After a visit to the banya, your skin will be glowing and you can tell your friends back home that you were man enough to brave the snow.
So why not forget the gales and gloomy skies of Britain and embrace the cold by heading to Russia for a winter holiday?
